  38 Thank you for reviewing my application for the position of Assistant
  39 Professor of Physics at Saint Martin's University.  Over my years
  40 working on my Ph.D. studies at Drexel University, I have been looking
  41 forward to teaching physics at a small, undergraduate-oriented liberal
  42 arts college.  While working at a larger research-oriented institution
  43 has been exciting, I have always been attracted to teaching.  I look
  44 forward to working at a school such as St. Martin's which clearly has
  45 a strong commitment to teaching excellence and teacher training.
  46 Besides teaching physics, I am also interested in advancing the
  47 science of teaching as well as in developing open source experiment
  48 control procedures.  Over the past year I have been active in the
  49 \href{http://software-carpentry.org/}{Software Carpentry}
  50 organization, which trains scientists around the world in current
  51 software development and data management techniques.  Software
  52 Carpentry
  53 \href{http://software-carpentry.org/bootcamps/2013-02-uwash.html}{recently}
  54 \href{http://software-carpentry.org/blog/2013/03/washington-went-well.html}{ran}
  55 a boot boot camp at the University of Washington, and I look forward
  56 to continuing this outreach in the Puget Sound area.

  58 I am also looking forward to working at a religious school.  While I
  59 myself am agnostic, I enjoyed the traditions of my
  60 \href{http://www.archmereacademy.com/}{Norbertine high school}.  I
  61 also have a number of religious family members, including a
  62 grandfather and uncle who were both United Methodist ministers.  In my
  63 experience, a religious environment fosters a studied approach to
  64 learning, a willingness to grapple with big questions, and a respect
  65 for the diversity of humanity.  Students undertaking a liberal arts
  66 education are well served by each of these qualities.

  68 On a more prosaic level, I am excited about moving from the
  69 mid-Atlantic---where I have spent most of my life---to the Northwest.
  70 Starting in the Fall, my wife Emily will be opening a veterinary
  71 surgery practice at the \href{http://olympiapetemergency.net/}{Olympia
  72   Pet Emergency} hospital just down the street.  After years of
  73 commuting several hours from our current home in New Jersey to Drexel
  74 in Philadelphia, the chance for jobs that are only two miles apart is
  75 quite appealing.  My wife is originally from Vancouver, Canada, and I
  76 have enjoyed our annual summer trip out to visit with her family.  I
  77 also look forward to the drizzly climate, as my Northern European
  78 heritage has not given me much protection against the sun.  Being able
  79 to enjoy the outdoors (sailing and hiking!) without having to slather
  80 on the sunblock sounds like a good idea to me.
