45 I'm as sad as anyone to see that I let more than a month go by without
\r
46 committing to the notmuch repository.
\r
48 But I've just now committed the much-desired folder-based search
\r
51 This should be a handy feature for people bringing mail in from a system
\r
52 that stores information in the directories in which mail is stored, (one
\r
53 common case is users fetching mail from gmail via imap---in this case
\r
54 all gmail tags will be represented as directories).
\r
56 Someone bringing in mail from such a system might want to migrate from
\r
57 information in directory names to instead be information in notmuch
\r
58 tags. That might look something like this:
\r
60 notmuch tag +important folder:important
\r
62 Or it might be useful to run on several directories:
\r
64 for dir in *; do notmuch tag +"$dir"; folder:"$dir"; done
\r
68 Please note that with the code in git currently, only newly incorporated
\r
69 mail will be searchable via the "folder:" specification. So if you're
\r
70 wanting to search your entire email collection, you may want to rebuild
\r
71 your entire notmuch database. As a reminder, that process is something
\r
74 notmuch dump > notmuch.dump
\r
75 rm -rf ~/mail/.notmuch # Careful with this! Have backups in place!
\r
76 notmuch new # Of course, this can take a long time
\r
77 notmuch restore notmuch.dump
\r
79 Before the next release, I plan to increment the database version so
\r
80 that users will be notified of the need to do an upgrade like this. (But
\r
81 before I do that, I plan to implement a few more database changes---and
\r
82 some of them are likely to be much more invasive than this one).
