If I don't customize it to Latin-1, the current-language-environment seems to be calculated to French (which sounds logical given my locale envs), and then it works. I assume that French means French with UTF-8 whereas Latin-1 means what it means ;) That's logical, but far from obvious until you've found the culprit. Closing the Debian bug then.
