I finally got around to testing these patches and I think they're great! It would be fantastic if these could be merged into the main notmuch tree. FWIW, I've been using some elisp to emulate the behaviour of these patches ever since I started using notmuch - it's a necessity for my workflow. Your patches provide a much more complete solution than the bit of elisp I hacked up so I'll be using these from now on.
