\r
I dug into the Gnus repository to find the original source of this\r
change. For those who are curious, it's commit dce35658 from Feb. 9,\r
2012. Interestingly, the commit message is\r
\r
 Output text from external commands in the article buffer\r
 \r
 * gnus-compat.el: Define `timer-set-function'.\r
 \r
 * mm-decode.el (mm-display-external): Output the text from the command\r
 in the buffer after the command finished. This makes text-based\r
 commands behave better.\r
\r
which says nothing about the complete restructuring of the timer\r
handling, which further reinforces my suspicion that the behavioral\r
change was unintentional.\r
