+One option is to create symlink farm. Since it's only directories being\r
+symlinked, it isn't that bad.  I don't know how well this scales, but it\r
+seems to work for about 200k messages in 184 mailing lists. Roughly\r
+speaking:\r

+% mkdir list\r
+% cd list\r
+% ln -s ../.list.* .\r
+% mmv .list.* *  # zsh specific, optional\r
+% notmuch new\r
+\r
+Notmuch new took about 10 minutes, but now I can search\r
+\r
+'path:list/**'\r

+to add a second level\r
+\r
+% mkdir debian\r
+% cd debian\r
+% ln -s ../debian-* .\r
+% notmuch new\r

+Of course this could be scripted.\r
