TL;DR: This is a bug caused by GTK Emacs 24 and recent glib\r
(introduced somewhere between 2.33.12 and 2.36.1) when there's no\r
D-BUS session daemon running. It was "fixed" in Emacs git two weeks\r
ago, but you can temporarily work around the problem by running DBUS\r
or by exporting GSETTINGS_BACKEND=memory.\r

This is Emacs bug #14474:\r
 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-emacs/2013-05/msg00705.html\r
 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-emacs/2013-06/msg00002.html\r
Paul Eggert found the same cause that David and I painstakingly\r
tracked down over IRC:\r
 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-emacs/2013-05/msg00726.html\r
This workaround was committed to Emacs git master on May 30th in 8dea8fe0:\r
