As strange as it can sound, you can use alsa-lib without a kernel with ALSA support...

As strange as it can sound, you can use alsa-lib without a kernel with ALSA support, thanks to alsa-plugins. So don't depend on virtual/alsa at all. This should deprecate virtual/alsa entirely.
