It turns out they were caused by having old versions of xapian installed in /usr/local (which I think might have caused some mixup with headers and libraries being different versions). The decryption is working ok for me now (aside from the issue I mentioned already with unknown encrypted+signed). d tl;dr: yesterdays weirdness was not the fault of J.
