I'm the one that wrote the tmux patch (and suggested dtach), and yes in the end the consensus was that it wasn't worth it. About adding prereqs to the test suite -- in my private branch I have a rebased and fixed version of the patch series sent by Pieter Praet [1]. It worked fine last time I tested it on a system without screen and in a chroot without emacs/gpg/screen, so if anyone is interested I can post it here.
