At the very least, the error message could say "please run 'notmuch setup' from a shell". The current behavior (notmuch and notmuch-emacs 0.16-1 on debian) is to open a *notmuch-hello* buffer that says : Welcome to notmuch. You have And in the minibuffer, a message says "notmuch exited with status 1" *Messages* shows: process-lines: notmuch exited with status 1 --dkg ------enig2HSBGNXKHXPDKHBGHSIOI Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.14 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Icedove - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQJ8BAEBCgBmBQJSKJidXxSAAAAAAC4AKGlzc3Vlci1mcHJAbm90YXRpb25zLm9w ZW5wZ3AuZmlmdGhob3JzZW1hbi5uZXRFQjk2OTEyODdBN0FEREUzNzU3RDkxMUVB NTI0MDFCMTFCRkRGQTVDAAoJEKUkAbEb/fpcwjgP/0+DszIUI9R0U72pha4TgCmJ aG5aP4kwSe3ghvwvCZEoPXSD3BXsQ3GsaXWFXOqAk11HQ9sXMO8f47G/1PbbdKgA 45vdNklg86bx0pF9F8JdPRqyDEtSG3LoVBtPK1dn2IuIAW/fvXFTrKyxK3+Uds90 FqDx0kT/pn1r9P8iqaMMIBqeNmPpfhcApk7sf7noY92bWsR0IUBpdEJIhsb7voo6 pft9FKiZeszyuLi1I62rpcNqJZ3Q4EYFu8L2CuRNc5M7esEYHBPPBQcvNXVl9iz0 Zv7zQT1YHUfFqCZIA5PUlhgjUwkuBb2JALs1FZXt46GTmKlcIYYTy3we61WFKX50 We87LXAOnWBZegQLZ8a0Ke3LLvSs4AJdgJRICto/Kp/3luSgcNDgYFUFY724p2p6 lF7Rbbhy3YxdPXGzqjn0QDd3/uMs1vlybcz6MujZcRG7BeLyG4a2VEoi1djuGotH EwkepatJVWWxP8CoiBqShukjRKX6+FcJuOrcX5GPpdoFuzwINAt2BQrdCAYPok1G PKrfYi6oFBB+UnVha31dLpU9nKgPX2D2bpSMzZbZrh5lf7drTB6224SUgaN5H2EX q6ivCTAXwVG/91b+/ECLwxjHpwjYAxpvPwtO6XSir1kU8AxavXNcUzobUQctH1+7 pU9y97Ie5WRiPVMysoMY =kUkZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------enig2HSBGNXKHXPDKHBGHSIOI--
